A demonstration as to how the
TRUTH can be PRESERVED or can be PERVERTED!
5 people were chosen to transmit a message around the room, which would represent the pure transmitting of biblical truth.
The message was stated quietly, "The dog jumped into the water, saw its shadow and lost its bone." The message was repeated aloud by the last person who heard it down to the the first person who delivered it.
Person 5: "The dog jumped into the water, lost its shadow and ball" (Perverted)
Person 4: "The dog jumped into the water, lost his shadow and found his bone." (Perverted)
Person 3: "The dog jumped into the water, lost his shadow and lost his bone." (Perverted)
Person 2: "The dog jumped into the water, lost his shadow and then lost his bone." (Perverted)
Person 1: "The dog jumped into the water, saw its shadow and lost its bone." (Preserved)
This statement representing truth was preserved for one generation and has been perverted (changed, altered, distorted) for four successive generations!!!
2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

Elders’ Seminar
Acts 20:17-36
Michael S. Roberts
Audience: Elders of the Ephesus Church of Christ
Place: Miletus
Facilitator: Apostle Paul, the Preacher
1 Timothy 2:7 For which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle -- I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying -- a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 2 Timothy 1:11 To which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
Epilogue
Acts 20:17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.
Acts 20:18-27
1. Paul, the Preacher Reintroduced Himself
2. Paul, the Preacher Refreshed Their Memory
3. Paul, the Preacher Reflected on His Ministry
18 And when they had come to him, he said to them: "You know, from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you,.
19 "Serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews.
20 "How I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house,.
21 "Testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
22 "And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there.
23 "Except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me.
24 "But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.
25 "And indeed, now I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. 26 "Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.
27 "For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.
Acts 20:28-36
Insights From Inside The Seminar
28 "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
29 "For I know this that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
31 "Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
32 "So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
33 "I have coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel.
34 "Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me.
35 "I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "
36 And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all.
What did the Seminar reveal about the RESPONSIBILITES of elders?
Elders have Responsibility:
1. To THEMSELVES & 2. To the FLOCK (Church)
“take heed to yourselves and to all the flock”
Elders Oversee The Flock (Church)
Elders Lead & Feed The Flock (Church)
Elders Defend The Flock (Church)
Elders Guard The Flock (Church)
Elders Support the Weak Sheep in the Flock
Support the Weak Member in the Church
The Seminar ended with prayer by the preacher!
Verse 36 And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all.
Additional Responsibilities Of The Eldership
Ability to TEACH:
1 Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach.
Be EXAMPLES to the flock:
1 Peter 5:3 Nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
STOP the mouths of False Teachers:
Titus 1:9-11 Holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. 10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.
PRAY and MINISTER to the sick:
James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
DECIDE on matters of difference and ENFORCE
the doctrine of Christ: Acts 15
Acts 16:4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem.
WATCH for your souls:
Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
ADMONISH the church:
1 Thessalonians 5:12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you.

The Church Of Christ

The Church which belongs to Christ was Planned
The Church which belongs to Christ was Predicted
The Church Which belongs to Christ was Promised
The Church which belongs to Christ was Prepared
The Church which belongs to Christ will be Presented
The Church of Christ was established on the First Day of the week, the Day of Pentecost!

7 Sabbaths X 7 = 49 days
Leviticus 23:15-16 And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. 16 Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the LORD.
7 Sabbaths x 7 = 49 days
49 Days + 1 Day = 50 Days (Pentecost)
The Day after the Seventh Sabbath was called Pentecost
(Acts 2:1)
Sequentially, the Day after the Seventh Sabbath was also the First Day of the week (Sunday)!
Pentecost came on the First Day of the week, which was after the Seventh Sabbath!
The Church of Christ was established on The Day of Pentecost, which was the First Day of the week. Jesus died in Abib or Nisan, which corresponds to our April and Pentecost was 50 days later, which was in the month Sivan. Therefore, the Church of Christ was established in the Month of Sivan, which corresponds to our calendar month, June.
Calvinism At Its Core
John 3:16; Titus 2:11
Michael S. Roberts
Calvinism and Its TULIP Refuted
T-Total Depravity
U- Unconditional Election
L- Limited Atonement
I- Irrisistible Grace
P- Perseverance of the Saints
T, stands for Total Depravity: This doctrine (teaching) believed and taught by John Calvin, the Reformer, the founder of the Presbyterian Church, states that a child at birth inherited both the effects and the guilt of Adam’s original sin. Consequently, man is born totally depraved and he or she cannot respond to God without supernatural intervention. Postscript, Calvin in his book on “Institutes of Christian Religion” in Book ii and chapter 1, he argues extensively, his theological position for the Total Depravity of the human race.
The Scripture teaches that one does not inherit sin!
Ezekiel 18:20 "The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. (To sin is a choice)
1 John 3:4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. (Sin is committed, not inherited)
U, stands for Unconditional Election: This doctrine (teaching) believed and taught by John Calvin, the Reformer, the founder of the Presbyterian Church, states that man’s salvation is strictly a matter of God’s arbitrary election, which was settled before the world was made. Consequently, God chooses certain ones to be saved irrespective of any choice that person might exercise?
The Scripture teaches that one has a choice in his or her election:
Joshua 24:15 "And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble.
L, stands for Limited Atonement: This doctrine (teaching) believed and taught by John Calvin, the Reformer, the founder of the Presbyterian Church, states that Christ died only for the elect.
The Scripture teaches that Christ died for all men:
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
Titus 2:11 & 14 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
I, stands for Irresistible Grace: This doctrine (teaching) believed and taught by John Calvin, the Reformer, the founder of the Presbyterian Church, states the extension of grace, which is an act of divine power, cannot be resisted. Consequently, a person cannot resist God’s call to salvation.
The Scripture teaches that a person can harden his or her heart and resist the Holy Spirit:
2 Corinthians 6:2 For He says: "In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
Hebrews 3:7 & 8 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you will hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness,
Acts 7:51 " You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
P, stands for Perseverance of the Saints (Irrevocable Grace): This doctrine (teaching) believed and taught by John Calvin, the Reformer, the founder of the Presbyterian Church, states God would never allow the elect to fall away from grace, they are persevere unto the end. Consequently, a Christian cannot fall from grace.
The Scripture teaches that a person can fall from grace:
Galatians 5:4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
Hebrews 12:15 Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.
2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble.
Calvinism is diametrically opposed to the Scripture!
The Scriptural Government of The New Tetament Church
Michael S. Roberts
SCRIPTURAL
Organization Of The Lord’s Church
The “Organization” for “Congregations” of our Lord’s church is specified in Paul’s letter to the church at Philip:
Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
Preachers:-----------------------------------------------Paul and Timothy
Saints:---------------------------------------------------------------Christians
Bishops:--------------------------------Men ordained to be Shepherds
Deacons:---------------------------------.Men ordained to be Servants
Every evangelist (gospel preacher) should embrace this mandate “set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city!”
Titus 1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint (ordain) elders in every city as I commanded you!
Acts 14:23 So when they (Paul & Barnabas) had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
There are EVANGELISTS in the church, these men are the preachers of the gospel as indicated by the Holy Spirit in reference to Paul and Timothy.
2 Timothy 4:1-5 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching….. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers.12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.
The “Purpose Statement” for Evangelists and Pastors is recorded by Paul in Ephesians. It is a “Threefold Ministry” which includes 1. The equipping (perfecting) of the saints. 2. The work of ministry. 3. The edifying of the body of Christ.
There are SAINTS in the church, the members who constitute the church. They are the sanctified ones or the called out ones.
Romans 1:7 To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
1 Corinthians 16:1 & 15 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 15 I urge you, brethren -- you know the household of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints.
2 Corinthians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia:
Ephesians 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus:
Colossians 1:2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
There are BISHOPS in the church and these men are selected by the church and ordained by the evangelist to fulfill the shepherds’ role within the flock.
Acts 20:28-36 "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood………..36 And when he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all.
Elders must Take Heed to Themselves and to the Flock
Elders must Feed and Lead the Flock
Elders must Take the Oversight of the Flock
Elders must Protect the Flock
Elders must Provide for the Feeble of the Flock
Elders must Be Examples to the Flock
1 Peter 5:1-4 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly.3 Nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
The Church of Christ at Ephesus had Bishops (Elders):
1 Timothy 3:1-7 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach.
3 Not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous.4 One who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence.5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?).
The evangelist, Timothy was presented with the qualifying list, which was the test for the men who were to be appointed as elders.
The Church of Christ at Crete had no Bishops (Elders):
Titus 1:5-9 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint (ordain) elders in every city as I commanded you!6 If a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money.8 But hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled. 9 Holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
The Evangelist, Titus was mandated to set things in order that were lacking and appoint elders in very city.
There are DEACONS in the church and these men are selected by the church and ordained by the evangelist to fulfill their role as special servants.
1 Timothy 3:8-13 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money. 9 Holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Important Procedural Observation:
A Scriptural Procedure that can be followed for the selection and appointment of Elders and Deacons and that which is also applicable to the appointment of other ministries of the local church is recorded in Acts 6.
The Jerusalem church participated in a ministry proposal by the apostles (the preachers) in the selection of a group of men to share in the ministry to the neglected Grecian widows, not to serve as the leaders of the church. Unequivocally, the leaders of the church of Christ are the elders and the evangelists.
Acts chapter 6 serves only as a Scriptural Procedure that can be followed in the selection and appointment of elders, deacons and ministry workers.
Acts chapter 6 does not serve as a substitute or a replacement for the Scriptural organization of the Lord’s church. Today, we must guard against the same “Apostasy” which occurred in the early church in the area of church organization and church government.
Acts 6:1-6 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 "Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business (RESPONSIBILITY). 4 "But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word (ANOTHER RESPONSIBILITY).5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.6 Whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.
